Job Opportunity: Dash + Miller | Studio Manager and Woven Designer Maternity Cover Role

Dash + Miller studio regularly works with trend agencies, fashion houses, fabric manufacturers, sportswear brands, automotive companies, lifestyle brands, editors and contract suppliers to inform and inspire the creation of beautiful fabrics. Their hand-crafted approach to industrial design combines with their breadth of experience to provide relevant and unique design-work.

The Maternity Cover Role is to commence in November 2021 under a part-time fixed-term contract (24 per week). Salary £20,000 pro-rata

They are looking for a creative, innovative and technically confident woven textile designer with meticulous attention to detail, and experience in both handloom weaving and CAD design. As a Woven Designer, the successful applicant will work closely with clients and other members of the team to deliver projects within tight timescales. The ability to assume the aesthetic identity of both the studio and a wide range of clients is essential. The candidate should be able to handle multiple client projects at once, while also contributing to their internal R&D projects and portfolio of designs.

As Studio Manager, this role requires excellent organisation and communication skills to oversee the smooth day to day running of the studio. Multitasking, maintaining existing systems and introducing new ones where necessary, the successful candidate will be able to effectively plan and prioritise. The ability to self-motivate and work independently as well as in a team is essential.

A thorough grasp of the technical elements of weaving and woven fabrics is needed to support the design and administrative elements of this role. These skills are vital for accurate, relevant sample development as well as enabling clear communication with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors. A real passion for hand-weaving and woven design is essential for this opportunity to contribute to a small, but growing creative business.
Dash and Miller Studio Manager and Woven Designer Maternity Cover Responsibilities 
• Directing studio interns, delegating tasks and providing any basic training and support required.
• Liaising with the D+M team and updating the studio calendar with real-time information,
ensuring all sales trips, projects, employee holidays and any other important dates are accurate and information is up to date.
• Maintaining communication with global agents, scheduling the D+M portfolio and archive to be sent to agents between studio sales trips and trade shows in line with studio calendar.
• Maintaining records of which designs are in which location at any given time, ensuring this
information is recorded in an organised manner and is up to date.
• General logistics and shipping of samples, client projects and the D+M collection around the world.
• Organising freelance designers work and technical files, communicating deadlines to freelancers relating to D+M Webinar and sales trips, giving feedback on design-work and recording and printing freelance invoices.
• On-boarding new freelancers, communicating requirements for technical files and design
format. Ensuring all freelancers have any resources they require.
• Managing the preparing and sending out of technical files for sold designs. Liaising with client’s suppliers where necessary. Checking freelance technical files and liaising with designers where necessary.
• Photographing or directing photography of D+M portfolio for online digital collection. This includes communication with team regarding Webinar dates and deadlines for editing photographs.
• Recording of time-sheets for projects and time spent on the D+M Portfolio, ensuring the other members of the team keep this information up to date.
• Introducing and maintaining systems and procedures to ensure efficient and consistent productivity standards, including schedules and methods of recording technical information and documenting sampling.
• Keeping the studio tidy. Ensuring yarns and ongoing project work is organised.
• Designing and hand-weaving Dobby and Jacquard samples for the D+M portfolio of artworks sold to fashion/interior clients worldwide.
• Researching, collating and presenting studio trend forecasts in alignment with the studio and seasonal calendar.
• Practical weaving tasks such as setting up of weaving looms from warp winding to threading and reeding.
• CAD designing for dobby and Jacquard using Pointcarre and Photoshop to develop original artworks and weave structures, including creating CAD textile simulations for client presentations.
• Co-ordinating the design development for client projects through meetings, trend research, mood-boards, CADs and handloom samples to meet the brief for a variety of outcomes including fashion, interiors, sportswear, automotive and artist commissions.
• Defining objectives and monitoring overall progress of client projects. Working with the team to ensure goals are achieved and deadlines met. Communicating with and updating the client throughout the project.
• Ensuring that technical requirements, pricing and production limitations are considered when working on client projects.
• Thorough and organised digital documentation of design work for both the D+M collection and client projects including technical sheets, weave plans, photographs and physical cuttings of design samples.
• Sourcing and communicating with yarn suppliers, working with existing suppliers, researching and building relationships with new ones.
• Working towards the D+M monthly webinar and sales trip deadlines, finishing and mounting samples, ensuring new designs and relevant archive designs are woven and presented in a timely manner.

Training is provided for operation of in-house looms and CAD software, but a thorough understanding of hand-weaving and woven construction, and previous experience with some weaving software is essential for the role.

You may be required to attend international trade shows and client meetings from time to time, either to exhibit or as a visitor. This aspect of the role is Covid permitting and will be discussed on a case by case basis.
