Beatrice Larkin is a London based woven textile designer. After finishing her MA in Textile Design at The Royal College of Art, Bea has been focussing on starting up her own textile design business.
She has most recently been part of The Craft Council’s Hot House scheme for emerging makers and a recipient of The Cockpit Arts/Clothworkers Foundation Award 2014.
This year she has exhibited work at The Heals Modern Craft Market and the touring Rising Stars exhibition as well spending six weeks teaching fashion and textiles at The International Institute of Fine Arts, India.
By using traditional Dobby weaving alongside the capabilities of the computerised Jacquard loom Beatrice manipulates her hand drawings, offsetting patterns and scales to meet unexpectedly and blurring lines to create fabrics with a distinctively soft and sympathetic take on geometric textile design.
Bea’s fabrics communicate her love for honest, understated and uncluttered design. Her focus is on quality craftsmanship to create products that live outside current trends, inspiring longevity and lasting appeal.
In creating a business around her name, Beatrice will be aiming to build a coherent product range that conveys this brand aesthetic.
As part of the Clothworkers Foundation Award she was offered a studio and access to a loom at Cockpit Arts, Deptford. Committed to keeping production in the UK, Bea hopes to design and sample fabrics in her London studio and work closely with a highly skilled mill in Yorkshire to manufacture her Jacquard and Dobby woven blankets and throws.
Woven from the finest wool, her fabrics will be washed and brushed at a finishers in Yorkshire resulting in throws which are incredibly soft to the touch.
Beatrice will be exhibiting at 100% Design during The London Design Festival, 17th-20th September 2014 and The Campaign for Wool Interiors Collection at Southwark Cathedral as part of Wool Week from 5th – 12th October.
