The Cockpit Arts: The Clothworkers’ Foundation Awards & The Clear Insurance Award

The Clothworkers’ Foundation Awards are open to graduates within the last five years, these awards aim to assist weavers to set up in business by providing studio space and business support provided by Cockpit Arts as well as shared use of looms.

The selection panel, including the acclaimed ikat weaver and designer Mary Restieaux, and representatives of The Clothworkers’ Foundation, will be looking for up to four individuals who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit as well as creative excellence and craft skills.

The Award contributes to the cost of a place at Cockpit for one year from July 2018 and will include a space in a shared studio equipped with a dye area and Leclerc, Louet and electronic ARM looms.

The Cockpit Arts / Clothworkers’ Foundation Awards recipients will be awarded a place at Cockpit Arts for one year worth £3,000 (to be supplemented with a £1,000 contribution each from successful applicants, payable on a monthly basis)*The Award includes the following benefits:

  • Studio space and use of looms for a year within the Cockpit Arts business incubator, Deptford, London SE8
  • Business incubation / acceleration services including on-site coaching and workshops
  • Selling and promotional opportunities including Cockpit Arts twice-yearly Open Studios public selling weekends and other events
  • Opportunity to collaborate with other makers in the Cockpit community
  • Access to office facilities and resource centre *The total sum (Award and additional contribution) is linked to the cost of the space and support services the Awardees will receive.

Applicants will be expected to move into Cockpit Arts Deptford no later than 1 July 2018 and attend our Awardee Induction Day on a date TBC

The Clear Insurance Award 2018
Clear Insurance Management continues to show their commitment to supporting creative businesses, having run The Clear Insurance Scheme for Craft Workers & Designer-makers since November 2002.

The scheme has proved enormously beneficial to the UK craft community by providing an affordable insurance package tailored specifically to the needs of makers.

About the Award
Applications are invited for this Award which specifically aims to support professional makers who have been in business for less than three years and have aspirations to develop their craft business and practice. The Prize – a fully funded place at Cockpit Arts comprising studio space and support for one year The Cockpit Arts / The Clear Insurance Award recipient will be awarded a fully funded place at Cockpit Arts for one year, worth £5,000*

This includes the following benefits:

  • Studio space for one year within the creative community at Cockpit Arts, Holborn or Deptford, London
  • An insurance package from Clear Insurance
  • Business incubation services including on-site coaching and workshops
  • Selling and promotional opportunities including Cockpit Arts twice-yearly Open Studios public selling weekends and other events
  • Opportunity to collaborate with other makers in the Cockpit community
  • Access to office facilities and resource centre *The Award sum is linked to the cost of the space and support services the Awardee will receive. Please note that most studios are shared and sizes vary but an average studio space per maker is around 100-150sq ft.
