As part of the teaching team on our BA(Hons) Contemporary Textiles course and Creative Industries Department, you will deliver workshops in primarily in woven textiles. As well as teaching and supporting students, you will contribute to lesson planning, assessment and course development.

The duties of a Lecturer include:
• Teaching planned lessons and underpinning knowledge to students assigned to approved courses.
• Assessing students’ work in the classroom and in preparation time.

British Council & Anou: Open Call for Residencies

201408_BC_Common_Thread_Project_009_jpg_940x528_q85_upscaleThe British Council and Anou are launching an open call seeking 3 UK-based design and craft practitioners for the second round of the Common Thread residencies.

The residencies will take place over a period of 3 weeks, when the residents will live in the High Atlas Mountains with artisans who are part of the Moroccan e-commerce artisan-led platform Anou. Residents and artisans will lead workshops and share their practices with each other in this exciting opportunity.

Residents will be given the opportunity to learn from artisans working across weaving, leather, jewellery, woodwork, ceramics and metalwork.

The Weavers|Nest: Workshop Assistant

The Weavers|Nest is a weave workshop, open to professional weavers and advanced students on a project basis hire.

The workshop is organised around a George Wood Dobby Loom, inherited from Central Saint Martins, set up in a cosy self-contained unit at the Copeland Park in Peckham.

Apart from the loom itself, we provide our visitors with all necessary tools, desk space and optional technical support.

We are currently looking for an assistant to share the workshop management tasks.
Ideal position for a craft lover, willing to get involve in the development of a small scale business dedicated to textile makers.

The candidate will be skilled with:
– technical experience of weaving // dobby loom specifically.
– communication // engaging with crafts community, developing the studio network, dealing with visitors and participants.
– administrative awareness // accounting, invoicing.

Experience in teaching and associative involvement is preferable but not compulsory.

Hours: part-time job with flexible hours.

Salary: to be discussed.

Job: Neuba

Neuba is looking for a diligent and creative weave designer with a strong knowledge of hand weaving and a good understanding in Jacquard. The applicant needs at least one year of experience in the weaving industry and experience working with layered & multiple warped cloths would be a strong advantage.

Neuba is a small, independent British brand, working between England and India, producing hand-woven menswear. They explore the physical richness achievable with highly tactile weaves, traditional skills and contemporary textile design.

Neuba is retailed through high-level independent boutiques around the world.

The project will be based in London and will last for a negotiable six weeks, including a minimum fortnight of practical hand weaving time by the selected designer. Throughout the project they will work closely with the team to conceptualise and produce 4 – 6 new designs. This will be realised through two warp setups with 2-3 swatches/iterations minimum on each setup. Designs carried forward to production will form part of Neuba’s Spring Summer 2016 collection.

A dobby loom will be available for the project if required.

The person selected will also have to work up a design concept for the collection including a ‘sketchbook’, mood board,  and colour palette and be able to execute detailed technical notes to liase with the mill in India.

It is planned that the project will commence in early 2015. Successful candidates for interview will be notified by 4th November with interviews being held on the 8th.

Job: Botany Weaving

Botany_ wovens 1Botany Weaving Mill is a world leading manufacturer of aircraft seat fabrics, curtains and carpets based in Dublin.

There are currently two positions available:

Studio Manager for the sampling of woven jacquard designs for aircraft seating textiles and curtains and a Designer for Carpets

The candidates are to work with a growing team of designers in the studio based in Dublin within the weaving mill.

Studio Manager requirements:

  • Woven Textile Design Degree Level,
  • Self motivated, proactive approach
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Team Player
  • The person must be able to work with outside processors, dyers and finishers as required to produce the relevant samples
  • Manage the sampling of client projects developed by the in-house design team, on the dedicated jacquard sample looms within the production facility.

Carpet Designer requirements:

  • Previous experience preferred but not essential.
  • Woven Textile Design Degree Level
  • Training will be offered for woven CAD systems to create designs and structures
  • Interpretation of design briefs with creative flair and attention to detail
  • A good eye for colour and appreciation of woven wool textiles
  • Self motivated, proactive approach

Notes that may prove helpful: the studio manager position requires a strong person and is a management /organisational job. They manage the weaving, finishing and shipping for the designers. The jacquard power looms for the sampling are in the mill, these have dedicated weavers. This role is not design but is viewed by Botany as a role that can lead to design in the studio.

The carpets are designed in the studio and manufactured in Donegal. The design teams and studio manager are together in the studio which is attached to the mill.

Job: Woven Studio

Woven studio photoWoven Studio is looking for a new designer. The job involves hand weaving at a very high level for the designer end of the market. Applicants should have technical skills and also have some jacquard weaving skills as the role will involve working on the fashion collection for Vanners Mill and developing fabrics with our clients.

Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of photoshop and understand how to put designs into repeat. There will be some travel to Europe and also USA so a confident manner in dealing with our customers is required. The Studio is based in Bethnal Green, London.

Woven Studio is looking for a designer with a few years experience already in the woven industry, but would consider graduates who have experience from working as interns within the industry whilst studying.

Bonnie Kirkwood Ltd: Freelance woven textile designer required

Bonnie Kirkwood, Textile Designer photographed in her room, LondBonnie Kirkwood Ltd (MA RCA) based at Cockpit Arts Studios in Central London, is looking for a freelance woven textile designer,  MA student or MA graduate.

The applicant must be a creative and enthusiastic individual, initially flexible with their time and be available during specific contracts and busy periods. Working closely with Bonnie Kirkwood the applicant will gain invaluable knowledge, by working on varying projects designing high end fabric collections for international fabric mills.

Responsibilities will include using cad programmes to present design concepts, weaving seasonal sample collections by hand, warp and loom set up and general admin. This role could potentially lead to a more regular position for the right person.

Skills required:  confident weaving knowledge and experience on a 24 shaft ARM loom, warp winding and loom set up,  excellent colour skills and weave structure knowledge,  confident Photoshop and Illustrator design skills for weave and print designing (and have access to use photoshop / illustrator programmes). Additionally research trend and fabric qualities, excellent time management, reliability and organisational skills are essential and an ability to work independently in a confident manner.

About the role
Quarry Bank Mill is one of Britain’s greatest industrial sites. Overflowing with atmosphere of the Industrial Revolution, Channel 4 recently filmed the series, The Mill, here based on its history. From the cotton mill powered by Europe’s strongest working waterwheel to Apprentice House, the safe home built for pauper children, the successful candidate will help bring all the magic of this famous property to life.

Demonstrating weaving techniques on historic machinery and sharing secrets and stories of the Apprentice House, you’ll get people involved in exciting tours of Quarry Bank Mill. The National Trust wants everyone who visits to get a good insight into its history. You will talk about how domestic life was back then and you additionally you will demonstrate skills by spinning thread and woven fabric using our carding, spinning and weaving machinery, while talking to visitors about how it all works. From school sessions to special events, your work will make sure people leave smiling, full of new knowledge and excited to return.

Sharing stories and operating historic machinery, the successful candidate will bring the history of Quarry Bank Mill to life, taking visitors back in time on a tour that they won’t forget.

The role is based on 780 annualised hours so hours worked may vary from month to month but your salary will be paid in 12 equal installments over the year.

Skills required
You will have existing excellent customer service skills, a great imagination and a welcoming smile. Engaging and entertaining, you need to be able to confidently share stories in a way that interests and excites people of all ages, from all backgrounds. An interest in history and textiles would be a real bonus. Do not worry if you’ve never used spinning or weaving equipment before – the National Trust will give you plenty of training but you need to be switched-on, engaged and confident following health & safety regulations. You won’t be afraid to get stuck in, working together with colleagues to give visitors the best experience.
